Intensive Family Program
A close and connected family is the cornerstone to any successful recovery
Family members are greatly affected by another’s substance abuse and/or mental health. Family members can experience stressful, and sometimes frightening experiences as a direct result of their loved one’s substance abuse and/or mental health. The ability of family members to tolerate and communicate with their loved one can become greatly inhibited in the presence of substance abuse, mental health condition or co-occurring disorder.
Families affected by their loved one’s substance abuse and/or mental health may be unable to maintain healthy relationships and may be forced to adopt maladaptive strategies of communicating with one another as a means to avoid upsetting or triggering aggressive or violent behavior by their loved ones. Many family members live in constant fear and worry as they become accustomed to the erratic and negative behaviors exhibited by their loved ones.
When a patient enters recovery for substance abuse and/or a mental health condition, family relationships may be broken. The integration of family members into their loved one’s rehabilitation has only recently gained popularity in behavioral health treatment; however, it is an effective tool that provides patients with greater treatment outcomes and recovery.
Sovereign Health offers behavioral health treatment for substance abuse, mental health and co-occurring disorders. Our licensed health care professionals and expert staff provide patients with cutting-edge treatments and interventions, individualized programs and a full continuum of therapeutic care.
The family is one of the most important sources of support to patients in treatment. Patients who are provided encouragement and support from family members greatly benefit from the integration of family services into their treatment programs. Not only does a strong family support system lead to a better overall recovery for patients, but family members benefit from education, therapy and peer-support they receive during the treatment process as well.
In an effort to provide our patients and families with comprehensive and individualized treatment, Sovereign Health provides family services to patients and their families such as our two-day intensive family program. The two-day intensive family program is an important tool for patients and their families to learn about their specific condition and how to repair and strengthen their relationships, which can promote healing for everyone involved in the patient’s treatment.
Intensive family program
Sovereign Health’s two-day intensive family program is offered bi-monthly to patients and their family members at each treatment location. The intensive family program is an opportunity for families to come together and learn about the patient’s specific diagnosis while spending quality time with their loved ones.
The two-day intensive family program offered at Sovereign Health provides services including:
- Presentations by clinical staff
- Personal and family goal-setting
- Reading and reflection
- Individual, group and family psychotherapy
Families in the intensive family program participate in interactive activities that are directed at the maintenance and restoration of broken family relationships, which promote healing for everyone involved in the treatment process. The techniques utilized in the family program also provide families with knowledge about their loved one’s condition and teaches them how they can support their loved ones in their treatment and recovery.
Through education and guidance, family members develop a better understanding of their loved one’s problems, gain insight on the treatment process and learn appropriate ways of providing their loved ones with support. The intensive family program explains the ways that behavioral health problems can affect families and teaches family members what they can do to take care of themselves and their collective health.
Some of the discussion topics for the intensive family groups include:
- Family roles and dynamics
- Establishing appropriate boundaries
- Enabling and codependency
- Managing symptoms and triggers
- Continuing care planning
- Alumni services
Individuals who participate in the intensive family program are better able to accept their loved one’s condition and find a way to overcome any issues together. During family therapy, patients and families learn effective communication and conflict-resolution skills, which can be useful for mending their damaged or broken relationships. Family members also develop knowledge and understanding of their loved one’s unique problems and learn how they can better manage and support their loved ones.
The goal of the intensive family program is to provide patients with a strong family support system to help promote their treatment outcomes, recovery and overall well-being. Sovereign Health’s intensive family program benefits patients and their families by helping them to begin rebuilding and strengthening their damaged relationships and provides a safe environment for families to work together through interpersonal problems.
Sovereign Health supports families by offering specific family services designed to educate them and provide them with support.
