Development and Clinical Approaches
October’s “LGBT Identity Development and Clinical Approaches” with Jennifer DeFeo, Phd
Sovereign Health’s San Clemente, Calif. headquarters is pleased to announce our monthly C.E. seminar on “LGBT Identity Development and Clinical Approaches,” presented by Jennifer DeFeo, Phd during our free OC networking luncheon on October 8th.
Bringing over a decade of experience in clinical psychology, Dr. DeFeo works with a wide variety of clients, helping them overcome their obstacles and empower themselves to be the person they are striving to become. In addition to providing therapy as a licensed psychologist, Dr. DeFeo is also a full-time professor and educator, teaching new and effective therapeutic methods to treatment providers.
The hour and a half-long presentation focuses on understanding the development of individuals that are coming out as a homosexual, bisexual or transgender person, stressing the importance of gaining a familiarity with and being sensitive to these developmental stages when treating such clients. The C.E. workshop discusses clinical interventions for each various stage of the “coming out” process, utilizing the Cass Model, a six stage sexual identity model developed by Vivian Cass in 1979 and one of the fundamental theories behind the development of identity in LGBT individuals.
By the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to identify all six stages of the coming out process as well as effective clinical interventions for each particular stage. Methods for being more sensitive to LGBT will be learned such as neutral language and other clinical skills to help better tailor treatment to the patient’s particular situation.
