Levels of Care

Addiction treatment can be divided into levels of care depending on the patient’s needs. Treatment works by addressing the most acute form to the least acute form.

Detoxification is the first step in the process and is used to remove the drug from the body. Medications can assist in this process to help ease withdrawal effects and make the process more comfortable. This stage of treatment usually lasts several days, varying by the substance and the severity of the addiction.

Residential treatment (RT) is the next level of care, and patients will undergo this treatment if they are not capable of living independently and therefore require around-the-clock supervision and care. Patients reside in one of our professionally staffed residences when they are not receiving treatment at our facility.

Partial hospitalization (PHP) is a combination of inpatient and outpatient care. It can be used to treat patients who do not require around-the-clock monitoring but who need more care than in an outpatient facility.

Intensive outpatient (IOP) is the least intense treatment program and allows patients to be treated on an outpatient approach. As such, they can come and go from the facility and reside in their home at night. It is somewhat similar to being treated for a chronic medical disease by a primary care physician on a checkup basis.
