Detox Treatment Programs

Detox: The first step to a clean life

When addicts stop taking their substance of choice, they often experience uncomfortable or dangerous withdrawal symptoms. They may be unable to sleep at night because their thoughts keep racing, or unable to attend work or social activities due to severe nausea. Withdrawal from some substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines even put individuals at risk of death or serious brain damage.

Many addicts are afraid to quit because the first step — withdrawal — is so daunting. Thankfully detox treatment can help with these problems. Detoxification treatment is one way in which these withdrawal symptoms can be mitigated — if not outright eliminated.

What is detox treatment?

Detoxification treatment — or detox treatment— is the process of eliminating harmful and poisonous substances from the body.

At Sovereign Health, we provide detox services for:

  • Alcohol
  • Illicit drugs
  • Prescription drugs

The goal of detox treatment centers is not only to remove these harmful substances from the system, but also to reduce the symptoms associated with withdrawal.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a disease that manipulates a person’s sense of reward, motivation, memory and a number of related neurological functions.

Common withdrawal symptoms

When addicts stop using addictive substances, they often experience withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the drug that is causing the symptoms. Here are a few examples of drugs and their various withdrawal symptoms.

  • Muscle aches and cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sweating

  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Disorientation
  • Tremors
  • Loss of consciousness

  • Depressed mood
  • Fatigue
  • Increased appetite
  • Vivid nightmares
  • Agitation

  • Dizziness
  • Aches and pains
  • Coma
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Psychosis

Because withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous (especially alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms), professional detoxification is an essential step in the recovery process. Once these withdrawal symptoms are minimized or alleviated, patients can more easily focus on long-term recovery.

Detox programs at Sovereign Health

Sovereign Health is proud to offer its patients several acute detox programs, including both medically assisted detox and nutritionally assisted detox.

During medically assisted detox, our professionals use medication to relieve withdrawal symptoms. The specific medication will depend upon the specific substance of abuse. For example, methadone, Suboxone and naltrexone are used to treat opioid addiction and the accompanying withdrawal symptoms. Benzodiazepine withdrawal is treated with a slow taper of benzodiazepine administration.

During nutritionally assisted detox, patients receive an IV filled with vitamins, amino acids and other substances designed to speed up the brain’s natural healing process. This cutting-edge technique is exclusively offered at our San Clemente location.

In both detox programs, our expert staff provides patients with soothing, evidence-based treatments designed to reduce the uncomfortable symptoms associated with drug and alcohol withdrawal.

Why choose Sovereign Health

The chances of remaining drug and alcohol free are much higher when patients are armed with skills to modify unhealthy behaviors. Simply going through a rehab detox treatment center and then returning back home without these skills increases the risk of relapse.

After the detoxification process, Sovereign’s rehab program provides many therapeutic activities including cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, equine therapy, art, yoga, meditation, exercise and nutritional counseling to ensure long-lasting recovery. We treat each of our patients as individuals — not a diagnosis — and do what we can to address their unique needs. The tools Sovereign provides help our patients survive and thrive in the real world long after they’ve left our facility.

Sovereign also offers patients a recovery management program so that they can continue to find support from our professionals weeks or even years later. For more information about our treatment programs, please call our 24/7 helpline.
