About Mental Health Treatment
Mental illness has only recently emerged from the dark ages, having gone largely undiagnosed in the past. These days, doctors and scientists understand the importance of recognizing – and treating – these illnesses as soon as possible. Untreated mental disorders can result in difficulties in school, work or home as well as a significantly diminished quality of life. Many people who live with untreated or improperly treated mental illnesses are also at risk of suicide.
At Sovereign Health, we recognize that each patient has his or her own unique history and that no two patients have identical needs. For this reason, our mental health treatment program is not only comprehensive, but also compassionate. We leave no stone unturned when it comes to helping our patients recover and live the best lives they can live.
Do I have a mental illness?
Mental illness doesn’t always look like it does in the movies. Oftentimes, the signs can be subtle and difficult to recognize.
Common symptoms of mental illness include:
- Disrupted sleep patterns
- Abnormally high or low mood
- Loss of motivation
- Racing thoughts
- Social isolation
Many people have more than one mental disorder, making it difficult to determine which symptoms are caused by which disorder. Oftentimes, mental disorders go unnoticed because doctors attribute the symptoms of one disorder to another. Mental illness is also often confused with vitamin deficiency, thyroid disease or other physical conditions.
Common mental disorders include:
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Panic disorder
- Bipolar disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
If you believe that you have a mental illness, contact your doctor immediately. Although there are no physical tests that can be used to definitively diagnose a mental disorder, doctors can use blood tests and physical examinations to rule out other disorders.
