What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a brain illness that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy and activity levels. It also affects one’s ability to carry out daily activities. The disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, causes severe high and low moods. Individuals suffering from bipolar disorder, a serious mental illness, go through unusual mood changes – ranging from very happy and active to very sad and hopelessness.

Bipolar disorder that runs in families usually starts in late teens or young adulthood and both men and women are equally likely to get it. However, mood swings and other symptoms can be managed with the help of a well-defined treatment plan in certified bipolar disorder treatment centers. Well-defined bipolar disorder programs combine medication and psychotherapy.

Bipolar disorder: Types

There are four basic types of bipolar disorder with all of them involving clear changes in mood, energy and activity levels.

Bipolar I Disorder: Characterized by manic symptoms or episodes, this type can last for up to seven days, but in severe cases, a person might require immediate hospitalization. It can also involve depressive episodes, lasting for at least two weeks.

Bipolar II Disorder: It is a milder form of bipolar disorder and involves milder episodes of hypomania and depression. Hypomania, however, may progress toward full mania that significantly affects an individual’s day-to-day functions.

Cyclothymic Disorder: Also called cyclothymia, the disorder is defined by numerous episodes of hypomanic as well as depressive symptoms. While the symptoms last for up to at least two years, they do not meet the diagnostic requirements of hypomanic or depressive episodes.

Other Bipolar Disorders: It includes bipolar disorders that do not come under the three main categories and can include incidents of simultaneous episodes of opposite moods experienced during hypomanic, manic or depressive episodes.

Bipolar disorder: Causes and symptoms

The causes of bipolar disorder are not always clear, though stress, certain anxiety disorders, genes, abnormal brain structure and function may play a role in it. Therefore, there is a possibility that a combination of various factors might be responsible for the illness.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a disease that manipulates a person’s sense of reward, motivation, memory and a number of related neurological functions.

Causes of bipolar disorder

Brain structure and functioning: According to researchers, abnormal functioning of brain circuits involving chemical messenger serotonin contributes to mood disorders. Many a times, bipolar disorder can be a result of an underlying problem with specific brain circuits and the functioning of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters.

Genetics and family history Several studies have shown that bipolar disorder can run in families. Some studies have also suggested that people with certain genes are more likely to develop bipolar disorder. Research also suggests that children with a parent or sibling suffering from bipolar disorder are more likely to develop the illness.

Environment and/or lifestyle changes: Individuals with bipolar disorder have a genetic predisposition to problems associated with the sleep-wake cycle that may trigger symptoms of depression and mania. For those who are genetically predisposed, environmental stressors also play a role in triggering bipolar episodes. As per research, children of parents with bipolar disorder often get surrounded by significant environmental stressors.

Bipolar disorder: Diagnosis

At bipolar disorder treatment centers, an evaluation for bipolar disorder might include physical examination, psychiatric assessment and mood charting. A physical exam followed by lab tests help identify medical problems that might be triggering the symptoms. A psychiatric assessment helps a patient discuss his or her thoughts, feelings and behavior patterns. During diagnosis, a patient might have to keep a daily record of his or her moods, sleep patterns, or other factors that could help in correct diagnosis and treatment.

At Sovereign, our team of health care professionals has the skill and expertise to diagnose and treat various forms of bipolar disorder. After diagnosis, we ensure that each patient receives the most accurate and efficient treatment as per his or her medical history.

Treatment with Sovereign Health

A comprehensive treatment for bipolar disorder involves a combination of medication, psychotherapy and experiential therapy. Episodes of mania and depression might last for a shorter period. However, some individuals might have lingering symptoms for which long-term and continuous treatment might be needed.

Medication

For someone suffering from bipolar disorder, different types of medications can help control the symptoms. Some of the medications used to treat bipolar disorder include antidepressants, mood stabilizers and atypical antipsychotics. At Sovereign Health, in addition to FDA-approved medications, we also offer pharmacogenetic testing. The testing is a new approach that helps discover the most effective drug for the treatment of specific mental health disorders on an individualized basis.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is another form of treatment that helps provide support, education and guidance to affected individuals and their families. Some of the psychotherapy treatments include family-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), interpersonal and social psychotherapy, group and individual psychotherapy and psychoeducation.

Experiential Therapies

Sovereign Health offers an array of non-chemical treatment modalities to reduce the symptoms, prevent relapse and improve a patient’s cognition and self-awareness. All our treatments are evidence-based and were proved effective during clinical trials. Sovereign Health offerings

In addition to CBT and psychoeducational groups, Sovereign Health also provides experiential and therapeutic activities that help in stabilizing mood. Some of these activities include yoga, meditation, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, cognitive remediation, neurofeedback, experiential therapy, equine therapy and rock to recovery program, among others.

EMDR therapy: The primary objectives of EMDR are to fight back traumatic memories and adverse life experiences, empowering each patient to live an emotionally stable and healthy life. It is as effective as CBT.

Cognitive Remediation: This technique helps our patients improve their cognitive functions, such as attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility and planning, and executive functioning. All these help in improved social functioning.

Neurofeedback: At Sovereign Health, treating addiction or mental illness with neurofeedback helps retrain the brain to react differently to stimuli brought on by the environment. The process helps the brain function more efficiently.

eTherapy: This is a telehealth video conferencing service, which connects patients with a licensed clinician in a safe and secure environment. The therapy helps a patient stay in contact with caregivers. It is a boon for patients in outpatient care as it provides the flexibility regarding the place and timing of the treatment.

Experiential therapy: We also offer experiential therapy that encourages patients to dig deep into their subconscious and uncover issues resulting in their mental health disorders. It involves role-playing, guided imagery, and the use of props to dig deep and uncover these issues within the sub-conscious mind.

  • Yoga and meditation: With a combination of postures, breathing and mindfulness techniques, yoga and meditation offer many physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. In addition to yoga and meditation classes, Sovereign Health also offers mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy.
  • Equine therapy: While treating bipolar disorder, one may work on an individual’s emotional regulation, appropriate personal boundaries, self-esteem, and relationship skills. Equine therapy, a form of experiential therapy, is a part of Sovereign Health’s treatment program that helps in improving self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, happiness, communication skills, self-control, focus and concentration. As per studies, the therapy can help manage anger, aggression and depression.
  • Expressive arts therapy: Aimed at improving self-understanding and self-expression, expressive arts therapy integrates one’s mind and body. An important element of recovery is to allow patients to express themselves in a healthy and productive manner. By combining music, visual arts, drama and writing, expressive arts therapy allows patients to express their thoughts nonverbally and communicate more authentically.
  • Rock to Recovery: This is another kind of experiential therapy, offered by Sovereign Health, that is effective for a mental disorder or an addiction. It allows patients to get in touch with their artistic side and to express themselves.

We also offer group therapy, talk therapy along with anger management and stress reduction classes that help change the way patients view themselves, their problems and the world around them.
