Mental Health Levels of Care

Sovereign Health patients receive a level of care appropriate to their specific needs, which can include residential treatment (RTC), partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient therapy (IOP).

Residential treatment

In Sovereign’s residential treatment program, patients receive specialized services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in a relaxing, vacation-like environment. Patients take up full-time residence in one of our many treatment locations, where they receive access to television, pool tables, and pleasant views of beaches or mountains, depending on the residence. All patients receive individualized care that has been scientifically proven to reduce the symptoms associated with mental illness, including medication management, one-on-one therapy, group therapy and brain wellness training.

Residential treatment is designed for individuals who are struggling with severe substance addiction, mental illness and co-occurring disorders and who may or may not pose a risk to themselves. Residential treatment is the most intensive program offered at Sovereign followed by partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment. Residential treatment is also known as inpatient treatment.

Partial hospitalization

In the partial hospitalization program, our highly trained clinicians offer intensive, medically supervised care for individuals with mental illness via structured, time-limited therapeutic sessions. The frequency and intensity of these sessions is carefully calibrated to the severity of each patient’s symptoms. We offer diagnostic evaluation, active treatment and maintenance therapy to help reduce the risk of relapse, hospitalization or incarceration.

Partial hospitalization is a level of care between our intensive outpatient program and residential treatment program. Individuals in partial hospitalization are typically experiencing intense symptoms, but are not actively a risk to themselves. Some people choose to step down from residential treatment to partial hospitalization, whereas others prefer to start at the partial hospitalization step.

Intensive outpatient

Sovereign Health’s intensive outpatient therapy involves regular, therapeutic sessions designed to reduce the symptoms associated with mental illness and/or aid in the recovery from substance addiction. Our patients receive top of the line care in various treatment modalities including group therapy, one-on-one therapy, medication management, brain wellness, mindfulness meditation, yoga, equine therapy and other therapies.

Our intensive outpatient therapy program is geared toward patients who have severe symptoms, but not as severe as those in our partial hospitalization and residential treatment programs. Many people step down from partial hospitalization or residential treatment to intensive outpatient therapy, whereas others start in the intensive outpatient program. We also offer evening intensive outpatient therapy, so that patients can spend nine hours a week receiving top-of-the-line care while still keeping up with their career and hobbies.
