Neurofeedback treatment

It would be nice if the brain had a reset button, so it could go back to before things went wrong. Neurofeedback is the closest thing we have to a reset button. It consists of a technology that allows the brain to recalibrate itself to improve cognitive function, memory and timing, and to prepare for the formulation of new neural pathways.

Neurofeedback is one of several forms of biofeedback programs that interfaces brain wave recording with visual and auditory stimuli. In other words, the brain remarkably responds automatically without having to consciously think about what it is hearing and seeing. Simply by looking at the images and listening to the sounds, the computer analyzes the brain waves and adjusts or “feeds back” the stimuli accordingly. This feedback process trains the brain to utilize more positive and rewarding thought patterns.

Patients who use neurofeedback addiction treatment as part of a comprehensive program of recovery achieve the best results. At Sovereign Health, we also provide cognitive remediation, psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy and lifestyle management, all geared toward reinforcing healthy neuropathways.

The advantages of neurofeedback

Neurofeedback improves brain functioning and quality of life by reinforcing optimal brain wave patterns that promote healthy thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Even NASA uses neurofeedback in its astronaut training program to maximize focus and attention. Neurofeedback is not harmful in any way when performed by a skilled provider. There are no X-rays, mind reading or manipulation. Some of the most advantageous aspects of neurofeedback include:

  • Safety and efficacy
  • Noninvasive procedure
  • Painless
  • No X-rays or side effects
  • Long-lasting results
What is Addiction?

Addiction is a disease that manipulates a person’s sense of reward, motivation, memory and a number of related neurological functions.

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Sleep disorders
  • Depression, anxiety and mood disorders
  • Brain injury or stroke
  • Migraine headaches

How do I Start

The neurofeedback process

After an initial assessment and discussion of the brain training program, the person is seated in a comfortable chair in a quiet room with a computer screen. The neurofeedback specialist gently applies the electroencephalogram sensors to specific areas of the head. Patients then see and hear stimuli that change according to their brain waves. Portions of the neurofeedback treatment session are done with the eyes open and others with the eyes closed. The whole procedure lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. Data are recorded and analyzed, and personal progress is shared with patients after each session.

Approximately 12 sessions are conducted over a 30-day period. Many patients report an improvement in how they feel and behave after the first session. After neurofeedback training is completed, patients who adhere to post-neurofeedback guidelines and who maintain healthy lifestyles rarely require follow-up neurofeedback sessions for the same condition.
